you may find yourself...

somewhere unexpected.

Sometimes your thoughts may be so clamorous that, distracted by them, you wander along, not noticing where you are, until when you become aware of your surroundings once again, you are somewhere you didn't intend to go. Maybe that's what happened to Dante.

The thoughts don't even have to be profound. I set off looking for some smooth ice to slide on, and found myself thinking about:

snowmobiles, pros and cons
my nature pamphlet
school committee
my latest story
art on the Web
all the artists and writers out there
independent presses
teen center's Battle of the Bands
remembering obligations
editing work

And then, I was in a part of the woods I hadn't even intended to be in. The part with white pines lining the trail. How had I gotten there without noticing?

Buddhists would have something to say about the distractions of the mind... but then they'd also have something to say about the distractions of the phenomenological world, too. You could just tread from dream to dream--whether it's thoughts, or the pine trees by the path, or memories, or sleep-dreams, or imagination, or vision, or conversation...

and now? the editing work
