rainbow glitter and photo preservation

I thought I'd do a messages-in-bottles writing prompt tomorrow, which meant I needed to collect a bunch of bottles, so after work I just walked the main drag near where I live, and sure enough, turned up PLENTY of little nips bottles.

I cleaned them and covered them with glitter. Fingers crossed that the writing exercise goes okay.

sparkly bottles

I didn't post that image directly into Dreamwidth. I posted it to Flickr instead and then copied it from there into here. I pay for both my Flickr account and my Dreamwidth account, but Flickr is solely for archiving photos, and it has much more storage available, and this is an issue because in three months I'll cease to have a paid LJ account--I'll still crosspost there (for a while anyway), but there's no point in paying for both it AND Dreamwidth--which means I'll lose access to any photos that are stored there. That turns out to be quite a few photos, so right now I'm engaged in the cumbersome process of taking any images that were stored there and storing them here, instead. Otherwise, come May, bunches of entries will suddenly have little question marks where once they had pictures.

It's a weird process. I'm working backward from the present. As I do, I'm unlocking all my back entries, which somehow, when I poured LJ into Dreamwidth, came over as friends locked. It's kind of melancholy making. I'm only back in 2016, and I've had a journal since 2006.

I wonder what I'm doing, a little. Why does this even matter? ¯\(ツ)/¯

It sucks how the internet is so ephemeral, especially when you don't want it to be.

Yeah; we're threatened that it'll last forever, but really it fades away and you're left clutching at empty air.

Sometimes I think the "lasts forever" is something that only works against you, never in your favor. Rather like "it adds up," or several other things I could never get to work for me.

Yeah, it's kind of like the gerund "riddled." Nothing is ever "riddled with joy" or "riddled with flowers." It's always "riddled with cancer" or "riddled with bullets."

We live in a universe governed by change, so how is anything supposed to last forever? The only way to access forever is to exit the universe .... which is maybe taking it too big; when people say "I'll love you forever," or "I'll remember this moment forever," they mean the forever of their lives, but even then it's a risky declaration...

Oh, my GAWD. I love those bottles! How do you dispatch them?

Yes, I maintain accounts on LJ and Dreamwidth, too. I started the DW account at the time when multiple denial-of-service attacks made it seem that LJ might cease to operate, and then I began posting from DW in protest to Russia's crackdown on gay rights.

Problem is that the vast majority of my flist is here on LJ, and I like my flist. So I don't see myself leaving any time soon.

I'll probably start paying for the DW account, though. I like to pay for what I use.

Hee, glad you like the bottles!

When I've actually left messages in bottles like these, I've put them on shelves and in corners of places for people to find. You *could* put them in water, but they're so small I think they'd go unnoticed.

Yeah, I'm in a place in life where I can afford to pay for the service, and I get a lot of pleasure out of it, so I'm happy to pay.

PS: Do you presently have a paid LJ account?

If so, you can batch the permission changes:

OMG thank you for this information. This is great!

I stopped storing photos on LJ years ago, in favor of putting them on Smugmug. it's a little more work to post, but I know the pictures aren't going to go away. Unless Smugmug does, that is.

Yeah; that's my feeling about Flickr; it seems to have staying power.

I post them on imgur. And for added staying power, I get them on the Internet Archive.

Yes! It's very fun ^_^

It's lovely! If I found one of those for sure it will make my day :)
Thank you for making this world a better place.

Aww, thank *you* for the kind comment!

I friended you here, but then saw you had a Dreamwidth account, so then I friended you over there. Come May, my Livejournal will suddenly get covered in ads, as I'm going to let my paid account lapse--so probably it will be more pleasant to follow each other over on Dreamwidth.

oh thank you! I'll add you in both journals :)

Are you going to put these bottles in the ocean? or river?
Mar. 1st, 2018 07:56 pm (UTC)
Neither--they're too small; no one would find them, and all the glitter would come off. I'll leave them beside buildings and on top of fences for people to find. (The few I have left--I gave most of them away.)
