the three things you need

On Twitter people were posting the three things they need to write. It was interesting because people were taking it in all sorts of different ways--very abstract or big-picture, or very particular and concrete. Some were external things and some were internal. So for instance, Virginia Molhere listed "A decent pen (non-traditional ink color helpful)" as one of her three, and Aliette de Bodard listed "A universe (basic idea of the thought system and where my MC is on the scale)."

Care to share your three? Not limited to writing--apply it to the creative endeavor of your choice.

I originally misread the question as inquiring about what three pieces of writing one needed to do next, and was unprepared for the actual answers.

I think mine are Familiar Tools, whether my old notebook and a rolling writer, or the laptop; All Previous Writing that has anything to do with the work in hand; and Mental Space.

I like that overarching descriptor: Familiar Tools. What's a rolling writer, though? Is it a handheld device?

And yeah, mental space...

It's a possibly outdated term for a kind of felt-tip pen (hmm, that may also be an outdated term but at least it's more general) that I seem to have started applying to any relatively fine-tipped non-ballpoint, non-fountain-pen writing implement. Basically, I prefer a pen that makes a pretty thin line and moves smoothly. I've done lots of handwritten drafts with a Bic pen; but there's a kind of catch in the movement of a ballpoint that isn't quite the best thing for me.

I know exactly what you mean. There are some ballpoint pens that I like but many that I don't, and yes, for felt-tipped pens, I like ones with a very fine line.

For art, I need a decent pen, paper, and perhaps whatever I wish to draw in front of me.
