It is very satisfying to walk out into the deep cold well enough wrapped up to not be bothered by the chill.

I paid a visit to a frozen creek. I didn't pick the ice flowers.

Last year I resolved to write creatively at least two days a week, to work on Spanish every day (or to make up days I missed), and to record the things I notice each day. I failed at the first and third of those, but I did the second and am pleased to know significantly more this year than I did this time last year.

Two of my goals this year are related:

(1) Continue to work on Spanish in the same manner, but added to that: find a person or people to practice conversation with. The duolingo bots have their limits. I'm aiming for in-the-flesh rather than online, although with skyping, etc., I know online can be very good ... I should probably set a date by which I'll achieve this. How about the end of January...

(2) Write a bit every day. Maybe phrasing it that way will make it more achievable than saying "Write at least two days a week."

(3) This is the different goal: Read a bit every day (not counting social media). I can double-dip with this a little as I have a Spanish-language book to be working on.

I'll be looking at my friends' entries to see if they've got goals/resolutions, but if you haven't shared in an entry and want to share in comments, I'm all ears!

It's beautiful, even if it is no place for the living.

I have no idea if I'll be able to fulfill my resolution, or if pursuing it is a good idea.

Left some thoughts on that topic on your LJ.

I hope your goals progress well. If you can't find a local person to practice speaking Spanish with, I can recommend italki for finding a Skype conversation partner. You can pair up with someone who wants to improve their English. Having said that, I didn't find my current Welsh Skype partner (who lives in Australia!) through italki, but minority languages are a bit more difficult.

Yes, it's definitely harder to find a conversation partner in minority or less-high-visibility languages! What's the story with your Skype partner in Australia--is she a Welsh transplant?

Not really. My Skype partner (henceforth referred to as A) has a Welsh granny who emigrated to Australia, but otherwise is the usual random mix of ancestors of European origin typical of white Australians. But A's reason for learning Welsh is rather interesting and dates back to reading Susan Cooper's fantasy novels as a child, specifically The Grey King. Unlike the other novels in the series, The Grey King is set in Wales. A just fell in love with Wales via the story and later learned Welsh using the same online course I'm using for practice and revision. The course has a forum and I saw A posting about wanting a Skype partner so we gave it a try.

We've chatted several times now and having discovered a shared love of fantasy, I think we're going to be able to find plenty to talk about! A is planning to come to Wales later this year, so we might be able to actually meet too. I just hope they're not disappointed with the reality.

The main problem with trying to find Welsh chat partners is not actually due to the fact that there aren't many Welsh speakers, but unless they live in Patagonia, they are already bilingual and speak fluent English so you can't do the, "I'll help you learn English if you help me learn your language thing." If they're a native speaker, you either have to pay or you feel your imposing on their good will.

*nodding*--yes, I'm assuming I'll have to pay something.

I'm sure she won't be disappointed! --Though I confess to understand the fear entirely.
