your voice makes a difference

One of the women I've been working with at the jail wrote an essay on what a good choice Early Head Start is, if you have young children. (One essay topic I use frequently is a version of "What child care situation is the best?") I said it would be great if the folks at the Early Head Start program could read it, that this was just the sort of feedback they would love, and so she sent it to them. When last I saw her, two weeks ago, she was on tenterhooks waiting and hoping for a reply.

And now I hear she got one! And I'll get to see it tomorrow.

It's so exciting. Her words made a difference. She did a thing: she organized and wrote an essay, and she sent it to the program, and now they can use it when it comes to funding battles to show just how much their work means to people. And meanwhile my student knows that her voice really does make a difference, that she really can help change the world.

I get all choked up thinking about it.

Well, the feeling is 100 percent mutual--thinking of your old job, your new one, and your work w/the Providence Granola project.

I feel lucky to have the chance to do it--*I* benefit so much; I hope they benefit at least as much.

Yeah; it's what you always want to happen, but so rarely does, but then sometimes it *does*.

There was another case where one of the women wrote a letter to someone who contributed to "This I Believe"--that letter had to go overseas, and it was always doubtful that anything would come of it, but it was still really disheartening for the young women when it didn't. ... So I'm glad this one did work out.

So often someone says something to a third party, but won't psss it on to the person most concerned. It's great that you have made that connection happen!

Honestly, so much of it depended on the people on the receiving end. I only suggested it--it took her determination, help of other people at the jail, and then a receptive recipient to make it all happen.

It is great.

Believing one has a voice that can be heard; believing one has the right to speak up is such an important thing to have.

Having even just one positive experience like this can make such a difference.

I remember when I was a child and I wrote a letter to an author I admired--and he wrote back. It made authors *people* for me.
