willows

A boy took home some twigs from a snow-broken marsh willow because of the soft, silver-white catkins. He stuck them in a jar on the kitchen table.

And they sprouted roots that filled the jar like a mass of tangled hair, and the silver catkins exploded into goldgreen caterpillar garlands, dusty with pollen, and the boy's mother said, do something about this mess--

--so the boy threw the twigs back into the marsh, and they stuck in the mud, and their roots wiggled and threaded and pushed their way down, and the greengold caterpillars became leaves, and the twigs became saplings, and for three years these events repeated--

--and on the fourth spring the boy was able to hop from tussock to tussock in the marsh, around him a multitude of slim trees with fluttering, spearpoint leaves.

It's magic when you can see life happening before your very eyes.
(Yes, I know it does all the time, but mostly our eyes are too slow to notice.)

Your words and worlds are an invitation to dream, and I thank you

... And for the boy, the willow-made tussocks were always welcoming underfoot--springy but sure--taking care of the one who had returned willow to its beloved marsh.

I'm so happy they could be this for you--my words seem like such weak things to me these days--glad to think they can still be an invitation to dream ♥
