seen in passing

Outside the drug dispensary in the wellness center, a older man with thistledown white hair had some kind of musical-instrument-in-progress on his lap. It was bigger than a ukelele, and more or less guitarlike in shape, though not entirely like a guitar, and it was only about as deep as a fiddle. The wood was wheat-colored, raw, and held together by a series of metal clamps. It was, he told me, his own invention, a cross between a mandolin and a guitar. He explained things I couldn't quite understand about what key it would be in, and how he was going to get the wood to bow outward, like a wind-filled sail. After I said goodbye and was leaving, I heard another woman ask him about the wood. "Beech from my own property," he said, "and spruce."

That's not something you see everyday, outside a dispensary--or anywhere, really. An embryonic musical instrument.

I seriously think your wellness center may be near Faerie.

It *is* right up against disturbed land--a site that looks like some kind of something has been attempted and then abandoned. I wouldn't be surprised if it was indeed shouldering in next to some sort of thin border with faery.

What a lovely phrase: "thistledown hair"! and a lovely hope-filled story. :)

Although "thistledown hair" comes with a certain amount of Ill Omen, from Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell....

Thank you - I haven't read that yet, so I missed that undertone! Is it highly recommended?

True! I thought of that... and this guy had none of the menace of the Man with the Thistledown Hair--but there was no better way to describe that fluffy thatch of hair!

Have you visited a luthier?

One of the only good things that came out of having the pipes freeze and break, in our Fort Collins house, was that we were introduced to a Good Violin Repair Person, who is also head of a small luthier shop. I adore visiting there.

I never have! I think, like a bicycle repair shop, it would be a place I'd love to just sit quietly in and watch.

Clearly, the White Knight has stepped out of the pages of Alice and paid you a visit. Lucky you!

My sister's boyfriend had made a guitar or mandolin type instrument himself, and it sounds great!

I'm in awe of the skills of people who can create a musical instrument. (I can make a stalk of grass whistle... that's about it.)
