riding the Vermonter

Train tracks run behind my neighborhood, where I walk. I often see trains go by: long New England Central Railroad freight trains and the Amtrak passenger train--the Vermonter.

On Christmas I learned that in January, the route of the Vermonter will change--it will no longer travel the length of track near my house. We've often talked of riding it, but our chance was fast disappearing, so on Saturday, December 27, wakanomori and I bought tickets to ride from Springfield, Massachusetts, to Amherst. Here are some photos of that journey (to see more in the series, or to see any of the pictures bigger, click through to Flickr):

Cars, you will stop for us!

The first is near where I waved at janni when she was riding the train and passing through; the second shows the woods between my neighborhood and the tracks--where you and I often walk, littlemoremasks-- and the third is from the railway bridge that was the sixth bridge in my story "Seven Bridges." I've travelled under that bridge on foot, bicycle, and car, and over the bridge on foot and now by train.

And here is a picture of the setting sun that Amtrak liked so much it asked to use it--I said yes.

And here we are in Amherst. I heard other people talking about how this was near to the last journey. Others were also commemorating it, as you can see.

Then we drove home in the deepening sunset

I get frustrated trying and failing to catch some of the scenes that unwind past the train windows - yout evening light pictures are a triumph!

Will the train not run at all, or will it have a different route?

It will continue to run, but instead of going through Amherst, it will go through Northampton. The new route makes more sense as it puts the cities of Holyoke and Greenfield on the same route, which will (eventually) be good for commuters. But it's a shame for Amherst!

This sums up why I like train travel so much! :o)

Train travel is marvelous :-)

But sad . . . I won't get to ride that one, I guess, sigh.
Dec. 30th, 2014 05:30 pm (UTC)
You still could, just not through that particular stretch.

Oh, how totally awesome! I haven't ridden a train since I was a child, but would love to again some day. Those are such beautiful photos!

We must find a good train for you to ride! (And then the time and money to go with the train...)

Those are very beautiful photos. The news that the Vermonter will no longer run through Amherst caused me to shout, "Crap!" loudly enough to alarm derspatchel. The station closed the day after your ride.

People were saying it was the second-to-last day, but I wanted to believe it was going to keep running right through to December 31 ;_;

There was so much nostalgia and affection in the air at the Amherst station.

That sunset picture is truly glorious. I hope Amtrak makes good use of it!

Me too! Wakanomori burst my bubble a little by gently pointing out that every day Amtrak apparently asks lots of people if it can use their photos, but even so, I can dream :-)

Wonderful photos! I love Amtrak travel, and now I'm bummed that I'll never get to ride the stretch of track through Amherst.

I have to say, it's a charming hour-stretch of train travel, and I'm very sorry to lose it. But traveling up the Connecticut river will surely be lovely too--I'm looking forward to trying out the new route one day.

Love your icon!

Clickety clack. Love the sounds of the rails. Good photo history of the last trip.

It rings an old-type, actual bell as it comes into the station--that's a nice sound, too.

How does Amtrak see or know about the photos? Yours is perfect.
Dec. 31st, 2014 12:21 pm (UTC)
That one photo I posted on Twitter, and I used the Amtrak hashtag. They probably check through the hashtag to see what people are posting with it. Thanks!

What a great journey! I love that mural with the red figures on the side of the building.

Yes, that's a clever mural, isn't it! It was Wakanomori who noticed that.
