Orion dreaming, songs, bees

You know how the moon or the sun look so big when they're right by the horizon? So does Orion. That lazy hunter is reclining on the horizon line at 7:15 pm tonight, dreaming of being out on the hunt. He seems to take up half the sky. Eventually, as the night wears on, he will stand up in the night sky and go hunt for real, and he won't seem to be taking up so much room. I know, it's all some kind of an illusion, but I never understand the explanation.

It's so dark now, dark and getting darker, but it's exciting--if we can just make it to mid December, the days will start getting longer again. What a lovely thought!

seuzen, whenever I think of Chasing Cars, I think of you. I stop what I'm doing and imagine you ice skating on a lake, like the one in that photo. The tune and words are melancholic in just the right way.

NPR had a story about bees that can sniff out explosive chemicals. When they smell them, they stick out their little bee tongues. Who knew bees had tongues?? If you have them in a box (BEES in a BOX), a computer can note when they stick out their tongues.... it's a complicated, complicated way of discovering hidden explosives. Complicated.

that is if they aren't little terrorist bees that refuse to stick their tongues out. ;~)

Seriously! Or very polite bees that would never dream of sticking out their tongues!

Yeah, me too! I wish I knew more. There was a guy I knew in college who took a class called "navigating by the stars"--how cool is that! I'd love to know that stuff (um... if it would happen effortlessly... sigh)

What a beautiful post. Makes me want to go stargaze. *happy sigh*

(and bees have tongues?! That's fascinating.)

For a scary image, check out the link b_oki provides in her second comment :-)

Bees have tongues.....is that a joke? It must be, the very image is hysterical.

Would I lie to you?? Check it out here... but it turns out to be old news (found this reference from last year)

I want to imagine this bees with tongues sticking out thing. You get to the xray machine at the airport. It goes through there, and then it goes through another box with a bunch of bees in it. But the bees need to get out and fly around, and airports LOVE to please their little customers, so they have this bee playground with tubes you can see through so the people can see the bees flying in and out. Or they have a "Changing of the Bees" event at certain times of the day. Or you have people with those nets on their hats walking around the airport with bees in a kind of wire mesh lantern and the computer in a backpack attached to an alarm system. Oh, the possibilities! Incredible!

Exactly! It's a system that seems to require an incredibly arcane set-up.... so you just know it must be in use somewhere.

I'ld like to see the guys with the mesh lanterns and their computers in backpacks :-)

I couldn't resist and google searched it! not really CUTE, but interesting :)

Wow! Yeah, not exactly ***cute***, but definitely well-endowed in the tongue department! Thanks!

And yeah, pollen is definitely their badge of honor, I'd say :-)

Maybe not cute for a human... but what if you were a flower? Hubba hubba

He he he... I love your description of the complicated bee bomb sniffing box!

Seems like such an elaborate, expensive, over-the-top way of finding explosives... I bet Homeland Security goes in for it big time!

I spent part of my early years in an observatory and Orion has always been a special friend of mine. Glad to see he's looking out for you as well.

He and the Plieades are my favorites.

These last few years Orion has slowly merged in my mind-universe with Mononoke-hime's Night Walker. There's something of the inhumanly slow but inexorable progress through our space yet not in our space, and the sheer GIANTness of the figure. . .
(about which more anon, over at sweepings)

Everyone should see that entry of yours--may have to cross post more prominently.
