A bit of silliness first. You know how cats like to sit on newspapers, or books, or that one cushion? What the ninja girl calls the Different Spot. Well, someone on Twitter suggested trying creating a Different Spot just by marking the floor. Here's the image from that tweet (tweet credit here and image source here):

So, posthaste, I tried it:

floor spot

Jiji approaches!

will he

.... and scorns it.

not this time

Maybe next time. The Spot remains, waiting.

This is Jiji. He no doubt read the tweet and saw it coming.

I hope he'll oblige me and sit in it later, though :-)

That's funny. Your cat is obviously of superior intelligence. :)

Hm. I wonder if it's a cave-seeking thing with cats.

I wonder! The ninja girl and I think it would make an excellent browser video game: cat finds the Different Spot.

lol... yeah, I have the impression that "different" spot must have different texture.

A worthy experiment. The Blind Cat (no longer, alas, wurfling with us) used to have this uncanny ability to find a single postcard in the middle of all the floor. He would then scoot his feet together as closely as possible so that he would be as much as possible on the postcard.

That must have been the cutest picture.

That'll be my next test: put a tiny piece of paper or a postcard on the floor.

Maybe Jiji is holding out for a more different Different Spot. The cat on Twitter got a heptagon! Why should Jiji be content with a mere rectangle?

Not even a rectangle--those angles ain't right! It's a wonky quadrilateral. Jiji clearly has Standards.

Yes, maybe Jiji's waiting for an Even More Special Spot to come along

YAY.

[edit] I realized what Jiji's scornful pose reminded me of: "Balthazar Disdains the Lemon."

I laughed out loud. That poor unoffending lemon! I have just the Spot for it.

Ah, but you're not paying enough attention to the Different Spot. Perhaps if you all stared at it, Jiji might show more interest?

I actually tried that! I went to different sides of it, so that to get my attention, Jiji would have to walk by it. No dice.

This is a cat, after all. Why should the cat oblige the monkey by being seen in the spot?

Next time you come out of the study into the kitchen, feel the floor for telltale warmth, especially if you see the cat perched elsewhere, looking off into the distance for a sight of the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
