The whale shark

Why do you hurl yourself ashore,
star charts etched in your skin
for us to use as augury?
Why sacrifice yourself
for aliens so barely literate
in the symbols you employ?

Thank you--they seem such marvelous creatures, all overwritten with celestial messages.

Everyone in the picture seems respectful and sad, too.

TBH, I don't think I will. I'd have to lock this entry, then, and I feel like just sharing the thought. It's such a tiny sliver of a poem. If I write something more substantial....

A dozen years ago or so I was thinking about a couple of whales that had beached themselves. I posited that they might have just been too sad to go on.

Whale sharks are certainly beautiful creatures. I like the image of star charts on their skin.

It's how they traveled through deep space to get here.

Lovely poem; sad image. ::deletes depressing musings::

I've always wanted to swim with a whale shark. One was often spotted in the waters off the southern tip Mayotte's Grande Terre, but I never saw it. :(

I love that so many of things I've only dreamed about have been your reality--like sea hearts and whale sharks <3
