A well-wrapped present

The other day a friend brought me something, like a giant cigar or a joint, wrapped in bright green leaves. "Open it, open it," my friend urged.

So I started, but my friend had wrapped this present well. If there had been more than just me around, we could have played a game of pass-the-parcel, with each person taking off a layer of leaves.

I unwrapped and unwrapped, but there was always another layer.

Finally I got to the gift within--solid gold! But not for putting in vaults or smithing into adornment; no, this gold is edible: sweet and juicy.

When I was still living in Kent, we used to go sweetcorn picking once per year - descending on a farm that did "pick your own" and leaving with a few hundred of them, wrapped just like that. Then we'd unwrap them, blanch them, and freeze them - and they'd last us most of the way round the year until the next picking season. It was glorious.

(We did the same with apples and strawberries, but they didn't last nearly as long.)

Kent England? My brother-in-law lives there.

We have a farm stand just up the road from us, so we can get sweetcorn fresh daily, before any of the sugars in the kernels have turned to starch. It's such a great summertime treat!

You must have had a fairly sizable freezer!

My parents had a couple of chest freezers, they were incredibly useful - particularly when my father would come home from the butcher with lots of cheap meat that we could then store for months.

I bought some kernels to plant on our balcony but didn't end up doing it because of all the time we were away this summer. I hope they will still germinate next year.
