Salisbury Beach, 2001

wakanomori remembers when we found this grafitti poem, on one of the boardwalks at Salisbury Beach. A line in a poem badmantra just posted reminded me of it.

Last time we were at Salisbury beach, the ink from the grafitti was nearly worn away, but wakanomori took a picture (which you can see both at his blog and here), for posterity's sake.

I wonder who did write this poem ...

From the boardwalk at Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts...

I wonder if the birds
begin to fly away days
before the lava flows
wonder if they feel the
heat + the trembling
from within the
Earth--and fly
away before the
air gets too black
to see I bet some
of them stay around
to see the very sky
they fly through
unravel

Nice one...the fact that you don't know who wrote it adds some mystery to it...

I agree--makes it extra special.

It's so beautiful.. And people consider graffiti to be vandalism..This shows how much of an art it can be..

Yeah, this was anything but vandalism. It was like a gift to the world.

really vivid--not sure I "get" it 100 percent, but the images really linger.

Thanks for posting this -- it's always shiver-inducing, somehow. The anonymity really adds to that. You've inspired me to flickr a few pics of our last visit there: you can see the inscribed pillar in my latest blog entry.

The picture really adds to the "mystery" factor. I really, really like the pic...I can't imagine being inspired to write something like that up for public viewing...it's kind of like, but not really, the running with scissors mom--she posts a poem on her "mailbox" each day and people leave comments back...of course, this author doesn't expect direct responses which makes it all the better, imho.

I agree--the just-putting-it-out-there thing is so great... like writing a poem in the sand (only a little slower before it disappears...)

There was one at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, by Holden Green, too--I copied that down... will have to post it one day...

Because of the danger and waiting right to the end--yeah!
