weee! the thoughts of an addled mind

Sometimes being lost deep within the realms of no-sleep can make me prone to bursting into tears; today, however, I am high as a kite. We are not yet halfway through November, and trying to do NaNoWrimo has meant that I don't believe I've gotten more than four consecutive hours of sleep any one of those nights. (<--it's an exaggeration... but close)

So on my walk this morning, everything I saw was marvelous! entertaining! worthy of sharing! Wow! For instance, the signs that appear somehow on telephone poles, the ones that say "At last! Affordable Health Insurance!" and give you a 1-800 number to call. Today, they seemed fascinating. How do they get there? Who puts them up? How is that person paid? Is the health insurance a complete scam, or real, but a false economy? There used always to be signs like this telling you you could lose 40 pounds on a special herbal diet, if you called a 1-800 number. Those, however, I don't see anymore.

And then there was the truck I saw that offered well drilling services (most people in this town have private wells). It said, "Frac Services Offered." I haven't the faintest idea what that really means, but in the context of Battlestar Galactica, it sounded... illegal.

But best of all, in the walk, was all the ideas popping into my head for the NaNo story. Suddenly I realized that a character whom I haven't introduced yet is going to have a whole extra role. When I realized this, I laughed out loud, because I felt like jmeadows--she's always discovering things like this, it seems.

Frac services? What could that possibly be?
You're making good pace on nano, you think there should be a thank-god-it's-over-party?
Nov. 11th, 2006 03:32 pm (UTC)
Yes! Actually, I want a party today. It's Fyodor Dostoevsky's birthday. But... I have to do editing instead. Maybe I'll make a cake anyway, though.

But yes, end-of-NaNo party, definitely.

How cute, making a cake for FD's birthday! :) You seem to be living in a different world today. And true - I too wonder sometimes about these obscure signs, graffiti in the oddest of places - who does it...does anyone actually call those numbers?!

I'm telling you, I'm just giddy today! That was a great post you made, btw, about people's insensitive comments--so true! And what a catalogue of remarks, as well. I want to post you a good response, not just a few lines--so, later today I hope :-)

Devil's Trill Sonata :>)

It's true.

I am SO in character, don't you think?

It's because my title character has made a deal with the devil, I think. I'm feeling very Tales of Hoffmann-esque.

Hey, have you seen this excellent Doubting Thomas painting? It's one of my friend heyes's userpics

And amanen told me this morning that she feels sad, because she just realized that one of her characters has to die, and I said, jmeadows would totally understand what you're going through!

Frac services: Fracture drilling. They pump a slurry of sand in highly pressurized liquid down the well to fracture the bedrock, releasing whatever is down there. Typically used to liberate natural gas from tough rock formations. We see a lot of that kind of drilling here in Alberta. There used to be a fair-sized local company called Fracmaster, which specialized in this stuff; it was taken over by an outfit with the disturbingly Freudian name of BJ Services.

So now you know.
Nov. 11th, 2006 05:54 pm (UTC)
Well thank you! It, itself, sounds pretty Freudian and violent...
Nov. 11th, 2006 07:39 pm (UTC)
didn't understand this...what's Freudian about the name B J Services? Please explain...
Nov. 11th, 2006 11:07 pm (UTC)
And the truth is, I'm not sure what's Freudian about the name either--but superversive could tell us, I hope (if it's not too hopelessly, you know...)

I was going to ask wakanomori what it was that I didn't know about the slang...

And really, about *my* comment, what I should have said was that the process sounds violent, and all that thrusting and injecting--you can imagine!

Asakiyume, I must tell you... Deponti and I were discussing superversive's comment last night and were wondering what 'that'abbrev. meant! Now that ligtning has just struck ....can't help thinking of a certain intern in a certain president's office!!

The mystery signs make me want to sit in a bush somewhere and scope out a telephone pole. Which sort of reminds me of Amélie and the mystery photo man. Which makes me happy because I love that movie. I'm having a good day! And all because of your signs... :)

So glad! That was a pretty cool movie (Amélie, I mean).
