You're such a good sport, joybon :-) I horrify people with my musical tastes--just when they think they have a lot in common with me (because they and I love X, Y, or Z), I say, "I also like Q!" and they say "Q?! You like Q?! How can you like Q if you also like X, Y, and Z?" I don't know... I don't know why I like some things and not others...

I don't like that echoes of the splendid "house of the rising sun",
are willingly kept in the melodic line of this song...why did U2 do it?

I love "The House of the Rising Sun" too. The first time I heard it was when I was about 14, and a boy sang it to me, accompanying himself on the guitar. He changed "New Orleans" to the name of our town, so it sounded as if the song was about our town. I loved the melody!

In answer to your question, there's no good musical reason, I don't think, for bringing "The House of the Rising Sun" into this song (originally sung, I find, by a group called "The Skids"), but I think U2 and Green Day probably did it because they had decided to do this song as way of raising money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, in New Orleans--and they wanted, willy nilly, to find a way to tie the song to New Orleans.

That would be my guess, but to be sure we must ask U2!

oh, it was NOT a question, my dear: maybe you don't know, but I myself
have been playing guitar since 40 years, LOL!...of course, I could easily
imagine the context - the fact is, I generally don't like "classics" to be
in some way "copied"...but I understand the U2's choice.

ああ、なるほど!I understand now :-)

Yes, it can be annoying when people hijack a classic for their own purposes--but I guess we can see it as a tribute to the song (even if the tribute is maybe not as nice as the original!)

そうですね、浅き夢様・・・はい、「tribute」のだ、そのように思います。

Re: poll
Nah, let me find something that it doesn't take nine times to like :-) You should only listen nine times if you like it!

Did you listen to the zombie song?

Okay, that's my first poll filling, I think. (In lieu of the big one next Tuesday, which my LJ membership doesn't give me access to.) I would listen nine times if it were on iTunes -- ooh, but it will be on my iTunes soon ですね! Goody. Now I'd like a Skids track or two just to see how they did it. . .
