fire and snow

Yesterday in the news, a story about hideous wildfires in California was followed by a story about snow in Colorado. From fire to snow. Very elemental. I have LJ friends in both those areas; hope everyone's managing okay.

It reminded me of the poem by Robert Frost, "Fire and Ice," which the gods of the Internet have deigned to make available online:

Fire and Ice

(From Harper’s Magazine, December 1920.)

SOME say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

And yet, a little fire is a wonderful, warming thing, and ice is so magical. Hmm, I sense false profundity coming on; think I shall go sleep for an hour.

The smog here smells faintly of smoke--as is usual at this point in the loooooong SoCal summer.

I can imagine! Scary. I have (distant) relatives who live near Palm Springs.

A sense of false profundity
Results often in word-fecundity
And false verse begins to flower:
I think of you it was somewhat wise,
Instead of writing of fire and ice,
To go to sleep for an hour.

Well, I like your way with words too...that phrase caught my fancy!
