vemin shooters

On my walk a mist rolled in--it wasn't there, and then it was there, all its little mist droplets blowing in my face. When there's a mist like this, it's like the cloud and rain spirits are right down among us... so magical... if you don't watch out (or if you're lucky, depending on your perspective), you'll find yourself drifting away in it to some other place.

I passed a Dunkin Donuts on my walk, a long line of cars outside it making orders from their cars, and the voice from inside taking the orders is very loud and incomprehensible--one of my childhood terrors, loud incomprehensible voices.

Three things I was scared of in childhood (not in order of fear, btw)

(1) loud incomprehensible voices
(2) those drain pipe things that come up out of the street and have two heads, like a two-headed snake, only sealed off. I still don't know what those are. Sometimes you see similar sticking out of buildings.
(3) horsetails. (see google pic, below) First time I ever came across these, in their non-green state, I was freaked out. It looked like the ground was giving birth to snakes. I called them vemin shooters (I meant "venom" but didn't know any better) and decided they were poisonous and told my younger sister so.

Now, I know they're a relic from ages long past, like gingko trees, and I like them. I notice that two of my childhood fears relate to snakes, and yet I liked (and still like) snakes. Weird.

here's what I was scared of (spore-producing stage)

here's the green, pretty stage

Edit: 'kay, I keep trying new images, and they keep not loading on certain browsers. Maybe this will work, but if not, check here: http://shirleyofthenorth.dunderbug.com/pictures/horsetails.jpg

So what were you scared of in childhood?

Those are pretty!

Childhood fears: thunder, dark, raised hands, sharp voices, Russians attacking, oh, just about everything.

Ah the Russians... yes. Nukes. Yup. Raised hands and raised voice, on the other hand--much more immediate harm springs from those. Terrors come both large and small...

Childhood fear and still is! :
cockroaches.

when we vacationed in Florida this summer, a huge palmetto (cockroach family) crawled over my leg IN BED and i totally freaked out. couldn't sleep for the rest of the night.

i used to have cockroach nightmares when i was a kid.

Oh in the bed! Awful!!

Reminds me that I had a horror of (a) rabies (b) leprosy and (c) head lice, too, as a child. I'm mainly over those, though. Mainly.

1. Clowns
2. Weasels (I still have nightmares about them)
3. Raised voices

When I first looked at that picture before reading the post, I thought it was of big spider legs. I can see how that would have freaked you out as a kid! :)

Clowns are just metaphysically creepy, I think. Like ominous, minor-key circus music.

Just a note about the shooters, my brain instantly turned the name into "vermin shooters". Sadly I thought you were going to share with us a strange new intinction (cuz I need a drink...[not really]).

Anyway my childhood fears fell into two categories, tangible and abstract.

Tangible:
1. The Old man
2. Getti9ng my thumb caught in a car door
3. Horses (still afraid of horses)

Abstract:
1. Dead things being other than dead
2. The fall of civilization
3. Fire

Just as a note after writing the list I find that I am pretty obsessed with the abstract list as a source of entertainment.

This is great (well, if fears can be great...); I like the way you've divided them up between tangible and abstract. My biggest abstract fear was of eternity and nothingness... it was terrible realizing there were some fears no one could make go away...

I've never seen a venim shooter but mark me officially phobic. Damn, that thing is spooky.

I'm all with you on the loud voices, gads. How do you feel about fireworks? They still freak me out. Oh, and popping balloons!! Forget it. If you ever want to terrorize me, get out a balloon and long pin and start chasing me. Hours of fun, guaranteed!

Heading to Arizona with some balloons and pins (just kidding--wouldn't do that to you!)

Under the water and outer space were both fascinating and terrifying. And june bugs were just terrifying.

Yeah, suffocation: I dreamed about being not able to breathe because I was in the water--that was really scary.

I don't think I've ever seen a June bug...I mean, I probably have, but didn't know what it was... or maybe I really haven't...

thanks for the interesting post.

I *hate and fear* cockroaches, and not getting things done on time....

I'm afraid cockroaches have very little to recommend them, I agree. Not getting things done is a fear I've adopted wholeheartedly since becoming an adult!!
