what is not visible from space?

sigh. the Great Wall of China.

I'm so downcast. I wanted it to be. Everyone says it is. And on a good day, from low Earth orbit, if you squint, it is, but not from the moon or anywhere farther out. And other things are way more visible.

I found this out while working on this China newsletter I'm working on. (Hmm... internal editor doesn't like a sentence that says "working on... working on") The author of one article had enthusiastically inflated the length of the Long March (it was about 6,000 miles; he had it as 25,000 miles--which would make it longer than the circumference of the Earth!), and that made me think I had better check his facts on the Great Wall. (He didn't claim it was visible from space, but I just thought I'd check that, since I was checking its length and so on...)

How dare you?

For as long as I can remember ,even in elementary school, we were told that it was true.

What's next? Santa? the tooth fairy? Pluto's not a planet? *sobs uncontrollably*

I know... I know... How will I find my way home (um, well, to China, anyway) when I'm zooming in from distant galaxies without the Great Wall to guide me?

I know. I was terribly disappointed too.

I've always known that was bullshit. Also, I remember that Dilbert comic when they decided that it should have been called The Dismal Flop of China, because it never really kept invading armies out.

So true about the invading armies! It's kind of as if France decided to celebrate the Maginot Line or something... though the Great Wall looks much cooler.

you are absolutely right asakiyume...now I can't go outwards to Pluto-the-planet...can't navigate back to Wall-of-China-Earth...I am now reduced to praying, "Beam me up, Scotty!"
