Bread and Puppets

Backward, from our journey home to our time in Canada. First, the journey home.

We stopped at the Bread and Puppets Museum. It was very big--very big--and full of large papier mache puppets--many many of them. Also all sorts of other things--painted stones, globes with things on them, wood block prints, books for sale, all kinds of things. I saw a puppet whose body was made from an olive oil container. And many more. wakanomori took pictures, as my camera was in the car.

It was in a very rural place in Northern Vermont. There was an outhouse--you walked down a path, and the outhouse was perched on a small rise in the ground, overlooking a scene that stretched to the mountains. It must be very cold and isolated in winter, but it was lush and lovely on that day.

People were doing their puppet-show-practicing type thing in the back of the barn that had the museum in it. There was music and things, and when we went back to look, someone was preparing food in a bowl, and there were kids running around; everyone seemed happy. .... I know that I can't really live in alternative-lifestyle-ville, because it has lots of rules about what you're allowed to think and who you're allowed to care for--as many as ordinary-society-ville, and just as rigid, but it was lovely to float down into that world for a little bit. The healing angel loved the scariness of those big puppets; the ninja girl and Little Springtime liked the books and the Cheap Art bus, and the tall one watched the performers practicing--he was somewhat bemused, but interested, too. I was near tears at the richness of it all.

I'll just post two of the photos for now--because wakanomori should have the pleasure of posting them first.

And later, I'll post some Canada pictures... which I took myself, so no need to be scrupulous about them :-)

and some of the puppets...

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont
Open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant
Got crazy karma, never harmed a single soul
So if you want to join me then together we'll grow old singing

Peace and love
Peace and love
That's all I'm thinking of baby
Peace and love
...

-Fountains of Wayne :)

what's the name of that song? do you think I can find it on iTunes?

I love "...move up to Vermont/Open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant"--I was thinking that all day, without even knowing the tune that went along with it.

Stacey's Mom
Are you kidding??! As a mother of teenagers, I worship the song "Stacey's Mom"--what mother-of-teenagers doesn't want to believe that all the boys secretly have the hots for her?? ("I'm not old... I'm hot!") Yes, "Stacey's Mom" is the fantasy... but "1985" by Bowling for Soup is the reality, maybe?

Thanks! If and when wakanomori puts some on Flickr, then I'll be able to post them larger format--it was a gorgeous place.

Nice photos....quite a view from that seat!! A great puppet master can make the puppet move like a living human, fascinating.

It's probably like clowns--or it's the not-human-thing-acting-like-a-human effect. Something zombie-ish and possessed. Yup, I can see the scariness!
