state of nature

The state of nature here is rainy--as it is for my friends in Arizona and Chennai--both places that don't get much rain. The rain spirits are just generous these days.

I noticed that the cattail pollen is ready for gathering. Maybe this year I'll actually gather some and use it with flour and make pancakes, as suggested in my guide to edible plants. I've always wanted to, but never done it. I tried gathering some cattail roots earlier this spring, but I think a better time to do that would be in the fall.

Also: the chestnut trees are in bloom and they smell just like chestnut honey tastes. There is a small grove of some kind of hybrid Chinese/American chestnut near where I tap the maple trees. I don't know if that grove is going to survive, now that they have BIG PLANS to build over in the abandoned town. I hope so, though. I get chestnuts there every end-of-September. I love chestnut trees; I wish I could go back in time to before the chestnut blight, and see the mountains covered in them--before the chestnut blight, one in four trees in the forests of the eastern United States was a chestnut (more here)

photos of other things in bloom

This pretty flower has the name dogbane :-(

And here is some cow vetch

And a field of clover

You use flickr, yes? If not, forgive me for confusing you with someone else. If so, could you please tell me how you do multiple photo posts to your LJ from flickr? I only know how to do one.

And btw, if I haven't said so already, I really, really enjoy your plant postings. :)

Yes, that's me :-)

Actually, I only know how to do post one picture directly from Flickr to LJ. You can tell when someone has used that technique because the photo gets an outline around it and says "originally uploaded by [flickr account name]" below the picture.

The way around that is to simply go to Flickr, go to the pictures that you want to put on LJ, and then one at a time copy the location address (a string of information ending in JPG)--then you can come back to LJ and either use their "insert image" feature, or else use html code to put it in.

If you want to use html code, then what you do is type:

[img src="the string of information ending in JPG"/]

except that where I've typed square brackets, you use angle brackets, and where I've put "the string of information ending in JPG"/ you put the actual location address of the photo. Don't forget that backslash.

If you've got a paid LJ account, you can also upload pictures directly from your computer to LJ--but if you store your photos on flickr, that's not much help :-)

Hope that works--let me know!

(says nothing)

Oh, ahem...

And I should add that everything I ever learned about posting photos--and how to use Flickr--I learned from heyes!!!

Thank you for this information. I do have a paid account, but didn't know I could upload directly from my computer. The way I'd tried it, I'm always asked for a URL.

I will give this a try! Thanks again!

You're welcome! If you want upload from your computer, then click on the box that says "image," right above the space where you type your entry, and then instead of choosing "from URL," choose "from file"--it should then let you choose from somewhere in your hard drive.

You can do that multiple times to get multiple images--the way you did when you put in the yerba mata and the red-winged blackbird from Google (only you'll be grabbing the images from your hard drive instead of the Internet.

Strange...I've been fiddling with this, and I don't see a box that says "Image" anywhere?? I feel so dumb! When I type in the code like you showed me, I just get a post with code on it - the photo doesn't show up in its place. Perhaps I'm not understanding your directions, which do seem quite logical, and yet it's not working for me!??

/hangs head in shame ;)

I just looked at the "compose entry" layout, and I realized the little box doesn't say "image," it says "insert"--do you see one that looks like that? On my screen, it's over on the right, above the message box. (If I knew how to post a screen shot, I would...) When you click it, it should give you the choice "image" (only choice), so you choose that, and then it gives you a box with the choice "image from URL" "image from file" (meaning from your computer) and "image from Scrapbook"--at which point you should be able to choose something from the computer.

As for the code, I probably copied something wrong or forgot to put something in. Here's what you could do--you know how you posted the picture of the red-winged blackbird? Well pretend that you want to edit the page. When it opens, it should show you all the code for posting that picture. Copy that into a word document--then you can paste it into a new entry, multiple times, but each time, replace the url for the blackbird with the urls for your chosen photos on flickr.

Hope one of these works.... Or that someone else has given more coherent advice--I didn't check the thread just now; just posted directly from your comment...

Hm. I don't get a "compose entry" layout, I get "Update Journal." And no "insert" box. I wish I could do a screen shot, too! It makes me wonder if we're using totally different interfaces, which seems very unlikely... ?! Weird. Oh well, I'll just keep making do. Maybe I'll feel like fiddling with code tomorrow.
Jun. 28th, 2006 12:43 am (UTC)
Yeah--"Update Journal"--that's what I meant. No "insert" box? It's like a little tiny box, like you'd check to vote in a poll.

I'll keep experimenting and see if I can do a screen shot.

I wish the rain spirits would get generous over our neck of the woods!!

Lovely photos.

The crepe myrtles are beautiful 'round here....you have inspired me to take my camera on my walk in the morning.

Can't wait to see the photos you take--but right now am enjoying your photos of the bison!

Can I just come live with you?? You are so amazing. I can't put it in words except that you really have life figured out and are completely grounded on what really matters.

I know you are going to deny this but from my vantage point, I am in awe really. You super duper cool, yes. :)
Jun. 29th, 2006 09:48 am (UTC)
of course you can!!
My dream, ever since I was a kid, has been to collect all the people I love and have them right near me. So definitely, please do come!!

yeah, the denial... you know... on lj I get to choose what I post, so none of the bad stuff... it's part of my way of making my life better, is to just post about things I like (mainly--sometimes other things slip in, though...)--not that I'm really an axe murderer or anything, but you know...
