why I hate town meeting

1. Town meetings typically start at 7:30 pm. The first hour is spent on boring (but admittedly necessary) business that gets passed unanimously, which means by the time the contentious stuff comes up, I'm itching to get home.
(Part of this problem is mine... If I fed my family at 5-6, instead of after 8 each night, then I'd be free for the night, more or less)
2. Debate can go on for as long as people want to jaw on--even when all relevant points have been covered.
3. When an issue is contentious, both sides (but often one side more successfully than the other) try to jam the meeting with supporters. Things can get uncivil. The vast apathetic public is underrepresented!
4. Vote is by shouting out "yay" or "nay." Lilly-livered cowards like myself feel intimidated about dissenting from the crowd standing around us--it's hard to shout out the opposite to everyone else! (or even just the nearby everyones)

That, by the way, is the beauty of the **SECRET BALLOT*** No one ever has to know! Your friends all favor position X but you secretly support position Y? NO PROBLEM! (but perhaps more self-assured people would simply share their feelings with their friends...)

Ironically, today's town meeting had a vote on a citizen petition to consider an alternative form of government... but I didn't stick around for it.

Sigh. Three boos for my failure to be a good citizen.

I think I'll post something else in a minute.

Three boo's?! No, three cheers!

For showing up at a town meeting (especially when it occurs over the dinner hour!). I mean, how many people don't even bother??? While others sit on their rumps at home, you weren't. You are truly involved with your community.

And if the boiling point reaches a crazy level, people can get downright nasty, can't they. Things can get out of control. So I think you were very smart to hold your tongue.

For now. There's always tomorrow to say your peace!

I loved this entry and think it is nothing but utterly fantastic that you are a true member of your community. :)

The little city where I live doesn't even have a post office but we have some lively town meetings sometimes.... mostly they are incredibly boring.
