In a Kate Bush song, "The Dreaming," she says "Many an Aborigine's mistaken for a tree/'Til you near him on the motorway/And the tree begin to breathe."

I have the opposite all the time at night. I'm always thinking it's a person standing quietly by the roadside, but really it's a mailbox, or a for-sale sign, or a trash can. I have the eerie feeling that there are all sorts of people out there who know how to transform themselves into roadside objects at the last minute. It's unsettling.

This morning we saw a kestrel on a telephone wire. I turned us around to drive back by for a better look. Later in the day I saw him again, at the same spot.

Here's a kestrel--but the others with me think that what we saw was maybe a female (this is a male)--so maybe I should have said up there, "Later in the day I saw her again..."

This picture has beneath it "Photographer: Tom Bentley." (Just so you know)

The raptors around here seem to pick a section of telephone wire and stick to it. There was a peregrine that sat next to the sheriff's office all last summer. He was so reliably there, I almost suspected he was fake.

ha ha--really it was a disguise for a camera to catch speeders. Or maybe he had a vendetta on the sheriff and was just waiting for the right chance to get him.
