more maple tapping

The tap in our red maple turned out to be the second most productive today--I got a gallon in all. It's so fun to put the jugs back on and hear the rhythmic beat as drops fall in. For the fast-flowing taps it sounds like dum-dum-dum-dum, and for the slower ones it sounds like dum... dum... dum... with a musical note in both cases. Really like the sound of a nice drum.

All three taps in the big tree with the rock seat by it had some sap, but the two in the good tree down the path had just a few drops in each jug :-(

Why? Was it because the tree is just not ready yet? Or because the taps are in bad spots? (but they're close to spots that were fine last year) Or because the taps aren't in deep enough? (But Wakanomori is getting to be an expert at this, and the others are good...) I think it must be the first answer. It's a beautiful, big, tree. Patience.
