Skunk crossing

Some skunks decided to bring their babies into the world behind a pizza place in town. I was so touched to see these signs. The response might have been "Ewww, smelly!" But instead it was these.

How sweet! Did you see any of the baby skunks?

Alas, I haven't, but I hear they are very cute. Some years ago, the tall one saw a parent and some little ones out for a stroll--in the same neighborhood, as it happens.

Please provide photographs if you see the skunks themselves!

I had a stuffed animal skunk as a small child; she was a realistically sized and striped hand puppet named, imaginatively, "Skunky." The worst feature of the species is that their musk smells like coffee to me.

It's a very intense smell--to me, when it's really strong, it smells sort of like burning plastic. I haven't seen any of the babies! But in past years, my kids have.

Skunky isn't such a bad name. It's taking the creature's title and making it affectionate--let be intimates! little you was saying to your new friend.

The burnt quality is part of what makes it resemble coffee to me. It is true that I have few positive associations with coffee, though.

Hah. Thank you.

She was a very good stuffed animal skunk.

If they're anything like house sparrows, they like pizza.

Something they have in common with much of humanity, too.

That's extremely sweet.

I stopped one time on a street near home so some baby skunks could cross. I blocked a line of traffic behind me. There wasn't anything else I could do.

Recently, a person in front of me stopped so a baby skunk could cross. I thought that was so wonderful.

When I lived in St. Catharines, skunks dug under the back room addition of our house and took up lodging. (This was of a course a problem and work was done to solve it.) Seeing three skunks jitterbugging at dawn was lovely and alarming, and remains a live image for me....

Right! Best to have them live elsewhere! But a wonderful sight.

I hope it works! I hope some of the babies make it to adulthood.

Diane LOVES skunks. They are so cute.

And their motto is: "if you don't bother me..."

Which is also mine!

It's a damn good motto! And that's right; I remember your saying that about Diane. Good for Diane!
