skateboarder
We went to a housewarming the other day--a lovely housewarming, lovely house, lovely guests. One of the guests was a skinny seven-year-old girl who was experimenting with a skateboard on the slightly inclined driveway. She may have had glasses; I can't recall. She had skinny short blond-brown hair to match her frame, and a big grin, and missing teeth because that's the age when you lose your teeth.

"I had brain surgery," she confided in me. "In PT I have to do balancing, forward and backward and side to side. This is like that."
She was really good! When the skateboard picked up speed, she'd crouch down.

"She's not supposed to do anything like this," said her mom, "but I want her to be able to try things out."

earrings
The youngest daughter of the house, who is only three, had stubbed her toe and was concerned with the blub, as she called it. "Blub!" she said, very seriously, pointing at the trace of blood left on her toe. She liked my dangly earrings, so I made her some of her own out of some hosta flowers. I bent them around her earlobe, like a hearing aid, with the flowers dangling forward. They looked pretty fetching, if I do say so myself.

misty moisty
Also the other day, it was a misty moisty morning.

One misty, moisty, morning,
When cloudy was the weather,
There I met an old man
All clothed in leather

I didn't meet such a man. But the joe pyeweed is quite tall now.

And in the mist, wild cucumber flowers shine like candles

The photos are so lovely. I've never seen wild cucumber. It's amazing.

And good for that mother for not stopping the child from doing her balance exercises on the skateboard.

Wild cucumber (which, unfortunately, does not produce an edible fruit) is a beautiful vine! Its tendrils are so very tendril-y, and its flowers are beautiful.

Yeah, the little girl was so happy, and her mom was just full of love and pride. It was great to see.

One day I'm going to get to see your Los Angeles (and I mean **your** Los Angeles, not just anyone's), and one day you'll get to see my western Massachusetts--both of us in person.

We're already getting a sniff of Autumn here too which is ridiculous in mid August. I'm wondering if it's going to be a hard Winter?

I worked with so many kids like your young acquaintance and I so approve of mum encouraging her to DO things not not to do them!

Thank you for these snapshots, both words and photos. The wild cucumber is lovely (we don't have that here).

I think those are the best kind of ear-rings. :) Did you ever do it with cherries?

If I could have done it with wild black cherries, it would have looked like reverse-color version of my earrings, as mine have little white dangling balls:

wild cherries

Do you know the song by The Incredible String Band, "Witches Hat?" It has the line "wearing black cherries as rings"--I think of that when I see the wild cherries.

I didn't know that song; I'm going to think that the rings are ear-rings! :)

We used cherries that way - when there were two with the stalks joined, I mean - every time we had cherries when I was little.
