I'll go back and answer comments individually next, but I wanted to share the answer to my poll generally first.

Nine votes came in for Groot--which is who I thought people would probably think I'd like best. And I did love him a lot! I loved everything about him--especially his eating his own leaves. He was my second-favorite--but not my first.

Six votes came in for Rocky. Rocky was a fun character, and I liked him a lot, but he was not my favorite.

Five votes came in for Drax. And that is the correct answer! Drax was my favorite. I loved his literal-mindedness, his passion combined with bumbling, his musclebound-ness combined with a loving spirit. I liked his way of talking. (But I liked everyone's way of talking.)

One vote each came in for Gamora, Nebula, and Someone Else. amysisson, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts for Someone Else.

I'd also be interested in who everyone else's favorites are.

And now the Big Brother observation. Amazon this morning sent me spam saying, "Based on what you've recently looked at or purchased, we think you'd like...." and top of the list was Guardians of the Galaxy. The thing is, I've never looked at Guardians of the Galaxy on Amazon. I've never discussed it ANYWHERE but on this LJ. I rented it from Redbox--that's how I saw it. "Maybe Amazon owns Redbox," suggested wakanomori. It turns out no, that's not it. However, Amazon does own Goodreads . . . and my public blog posts here get cross-posted to Goodreads. So I guess that's it.

Now to answer your individual comments!

Given the recency of its release date, I suspect GotG is associated with a lot of different items on Amazon.

Yeah, but it seems pretty suspicious that the recommendation came in literally the day that I posted the entry about Guardians of the Galaxy. And I promise, I haven't been looking at things even remotely connected to Guardians of the Galaxy on Amazon.

They also own IMDB.

That I didn't know.

It's kinda scary how Amazon and Facebook are everywhere these days!

Drax was one of the more interesting characters. It was cool to watch his character arc and how his idea of family shifted to those around him.

I liked all the "good guys", but each for a totally different reason.

I liked Peter because I saw growth in the character. The fact that he wanted to be an outlaw made him seem more like the little boy that we meet at the beginning of the movie, still a little lost emotionally and devoid of real purpose, but able to take care of himself. He had a good heart and wasn't a killer like the other outlaws, so it was satisfying to see him reach something of his potential and save others at the end.

Groot was so very gentle and loving at heart. He understood Rocket and what Rocket had endured and so he was protective, even as he was naïve and took direction from Rocket. He was dedicated to those he loved: Rocket first and then to the others, who also became "groot" to him. He considered them a part of himself, and I loved that. It was more important to save them than it was to save himself and so he extended himself and allowed them to become a part of him in order to protect them. How many of us can say we're willing to be that open and welcoming of those we love?

Drax started the movie hurt. He'd lost those he loved and had allowed that desire for revenge to fester into something that ate him alive and had probably changed who he'd been before the tragedy. He was single-minded and stubborn, but still seemed to have the glimmer of a good heart. When he allowed his desire for revenge to get the best of him and caused those who'd become his friends to get hurt, he realized they were his friends, and he did everything in his power to attempt to rectify the situation. He, too, was naïve, but he was naïve about the true power of evil. He was no match for it when he thirsted only for revenge, but by letting go of it, he was able to grow, too, and was able to become part of the force for good.

Gamora had done some bad things in her life, but when confronted by the fact that an entire planet could be destroyed and an entire race wiped out, she realized that wasn't what she wanted. She didn't want to be a part of a force that would wipe out innocents. She had no qualms fighting or killing, but by the end of the movie, she'd softened. And, she, too, was willing to go even further and risk herself to stand up for what was right.

Rocket, for me, was the most tragic character of the movie. He had so much pain and suffering bottled up inside him. It made him bitter. It made him hate. It took away all his joy in living and made him cynical. He cared only for Groot (which makes me wonder about their backstory), but he could even be short-tempered and insensitive with Groot. When he exploded angrily about being taken apart and put back together again, over and over, you could finally feel that pain and see what it had really done to him. And, yet, he, too, risked his life to protect others and showed us his soft side when he mourned for Groot.

I guess what I'm trying to say through all this long-windedness, is that each one of these characters had a distinct, individual character arc. I thought that marvelous and believe that's what brought them together as the team they began at the end.

I also realize that these are only my views and that other people may not even see this at all. :)

This is beautiful and perceptive. Thank you *so much* for taking the time and sharing. I love it.

Thank you. :)

This is what I look for in both movies and in books. In order for it to resonate with me, that emotional hook must be there.

Same here.
