Isn't fumarole a lovely word? Fuming, which is what the earth is doing--letting off steam through a vent. But also with that "role" at the end, which makes me think of rolling, or roiling. Roiling, rolling, twisting and steaming, and that steam--those fumes--are like ocean spume. Vapors and exhalations.

On September 13 in Pen Pal, Kaya discovered that some days earlier, an earthquake had opened up just such a vent, which released poisonous gas. Some exhalations are more pleasant than others.

Ditto to the comment above; volcanoes have a lot of good descriptive words. :D

People must have decided that something as terrible and magnificent as a volcano needed magnificent words to describe it.

"fumarole" will now be my word-of-the-day hobby-thing. I recall searching on Youtube "magma" as the rolling, churning Earth is quite the pleasure to watch, especially the underwater type with volcanic-vents and what-not.

Anyway, caught your journal from someone else. Relatively new here so Ill add you as a friend. :3

Welcome! I hope you enjoy LJ--it can be a very wonderful place. And yeah, there are some really **gorgeous** volcano videos out there!

Fumerole -- would also be lovely as something in opera. Either some sort of flourish of ... stringed instrument, anyway. Or part of a costume, perhaps a cowl scarf that tapers to a light sheer floating boa? Usually maroon?

Yes, whatever it is, it would be virtuoso. All the opera buffs would lean forward, one hand on their heart and one hand on their opera glasses, so they could see/hear/feel... whatever it would be :-)

Then to follow it for contrast (after some cool semifreddo), a fusillade.

And on the way home, stop for a glissando.

A fusillade followed by a glissando is a perfect evening--though a rapprochement followed by a cassowary is also quite pleasant.

That is a beautiful photograph.

And it's very much what I imagine the vent that opened up in Taneh District as being like.

Meanwhile, I like your new icon, who is a creature I don't know, but I admire its teeth, eye, and glowing speckled front.

Its speckled front is like the starmaps on the whale sharks. :)

You know, that's exactly what I was thinking when I was looking at Sovay's icon!

It's fanart of the kaiju Otachi from Pacific Rim! I ran into it while looking for stills from the movie and fell in love.

Sometimes, I just can't stop fuming.

Next time, I'll think of this picture and laugh at myself, because my inner roilings are insignificant when compared to the steam of volcanos.

Or perhaps the larger fuming of the volcano embraces all our smaller fumings--justification by volcano?
