July 27 in Pen Pal (post 2 of 2)

Ruby Lake (Nyiragongo)

Well it's been some days! But the next date in Pen Pal isn't until August 10, so it's good that I have a second post for July 27. On July 27, not only did Kaya write in her journal, she also wrote a letter to Em. She wrote about the dream that led to her imprisonment:

Some months after I came back to my country, I had a dream about the Lady of the Ruby Lake. I dreamed she had become a very old grandmother. She asked me why nobody celebrated fire anymore, and I didn’t have an answer for her. She shook her head and said it was too bad, just too bad, and started to walk away. I felt so sorry. I said, “I promise we’ll have a festival again.”

Thanks! I was thinking of you, actually, when I was doing the pattern of the weaving.

… of course now all I can see are the flaws, but so it goes.

The skirt looks like a Manipuri Phanek. But there's a similar style in Thailand maybe other S E Asian countries.

Wraparound garments like this are indeed common, and things woven on a small loom tend toward patterns like this. I was thinking in part of tais textiles from Timor-Leste:

And here is a Dayak textile from Borneo:

But yes! I did see textiles like this when I was looking at Manipuri traditional dress, just recently.

I'll be in Imphal in the Autumn I'll send you a phanek. I'll get herself to pick something via a nurse or guard. I wouldn't know what to get.

I had a dream about my grandmother this morning. That I hugged her goodbye and thought this could be the last time. I need to give her a call.

Her bones were frail and dear to me.

Dreams are blessings when they do that: let us hug those who've gone. I had a dream like that about my mother.

I'm glad a dream like that came to you.
