Today in Pen Pal (post 1 of 2): Sumi

Corvus brachyrhynchos

On July 27, Kaya wrote a journal entry in which she recalled the day she found Sumi, her pet crow. She also wrote a letter to Em. Here is her first glimpse of Sumi:

All along the dock, draped from rails, yellow and orange nets hung limply, drying, but this one was rippling and writhing. The other nets were sleeping. This one was having nightmares.

Something was in there, tossing about like a fish. I came closer and saw it was a bird, but not a white-winged gull or tern. No, this bird was black as ink.

(Photo is of a cormorant, not a crow, but imagine a crow. Photo source here.)

That is a perfect photograph. Did you use it as a model or find it just now?

Oh, I hope they successfully disentangled the bird.

The top one, what textures!

They did get the cormorant untangled, you'll be relieved to know.

And yes, fishing nets are wonderful!

The word images are very visual and as beautiful as the picture, which fits really well.

Poor cormorant. I hope they were able to rehab it.

I checked the source and it looks like the cormorant made it out all right.

yamamanama got to you with the answer first (my computer was having a reinstall today, so I was offline after posting)--fortunately, the cormorant was successfully freed.

Thanks for the supportive words <3

Those are always annoying.

Does that mean you haven't seen my set of entries about the weekend's concerts?

Set? I commented on one, but did I miss an earlier one? I'll go back and take a look.

The colours of the nets are wonderful! And I think crows are amazing birds - full of story and meaning.

Crows have helped me to find foxes. They refuse to be photographed themselves but they are always quick to point out a fox.
I can imagine having a crow friend.

A crow would be lucky to have you for a friend. I can imagine you with a crow friend, too.

I would love a crow friend-maybe one day.
