the return of the skateboarders

nighthawk flying
They came back to the church parking lot. I didn't have a camera, so I couldn't film their slalom course from the top of the parking lot to the bottom, but I did go over and tell them how happy I was to see them again and how they had inspired me--to which they replied, "We thought you were coming over to yell at us!"

I knew they thought that. I was afraid they were going to jump into their communal car and drive off when they saw me approaching. But they didn't, and so we got to talk. It was like approaching deer and not having them scatter. Teenage boys--practically like deer, so lithe and long-limbed. These ones, anyway. One had tattoos down his arm, one had golden hair, and one had a really loose tank top on. That's all I remember. Oh, and that in addition to their communal car, they had a communal cigarette that they were sharing.

When I came out an hour later, that set of three boys was gone but two new ones were there. These two were wearing helmets and knee pads, which the others hadn't had.

Do you remember what tattoos he had?

I think a name, in big block letters? Fancy gothic letters.

So not quite as cool as The Ancient of Days (the Blake painting, though an entire novel printed on one's skin would be quite cool) or prehistoric sea creatures?

The Ancient of Days would be wicked cool. as for an entire novel printed on one's skin, have you read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell?

So you've gotten to that guy, the hedge wizard with the tattoos?

OMG I loved that novel. Check out my tags on it. No wait, don't do that. Spoilers.

I'm about 167 pages in the trade paperback.

Also, I met someone with the Ancient of Days tattooed on her shoulder.

Wow! That's pretty cool (about the Ancient of Days).

You have to give Jonathan Strange time for the goodness to build. By about page 400, I felt like I was under a spell that was compelling me to finish the book. The tiny notes of ominousness just kept building.

Ok, I gotta track this down. Thank you both. :)

I'm sure it won't be hard to find (it came out in 2004, yes, but it's a well-known and well-praised novel), even if you can't get it for a dollar like I did.

Or you can take it out of the library and read it for free, like I did!

It is long and not without flaws, but I really loved it.

So good that you appreciated their aliveness and told them so.

I feel so very lucky to have had the chance to do so--I was thinking so over and over again during the next hour.

It was bold and nice of you to speak to them. For some reason your skateboard entries always remind me of the original Endless Summer.

I didn't know the movie, but after reading about it, I like the association :-)

She walks in beauty like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meets in her aspect, and her eyes.

Lord Byron was writing about you, only he didn't know it. :)

I wish I were that lovely woman!

Nah--you probably don't. Byron was a love 'em and leave 'em sort of guy. ;)

I guess that would mean, with regard to him at least, I'd get to be a love 'em and leave 'em sort of woman? But I'm always hankering after things I can't have, so yeah, probably better not to be that woman.

I could, however, see you as being that one, ethereal, magical being that grabbed and held Byron's poetic heart for all time.

If Byron wants his way with me, all he needs to do is crib some of your lines here--they are most winning :D

I hope you have a couple of seduction scenes in your books, because you have the knack!

I love that you had positive interaction with those fellows. I'm sure they are too often told to buzz off, that they are a nuisance, that they have no right to do what they do...

It's true that the parking lot is private property, but .... I wish there was more friendly tolerance for things like this. But then, we'd have to be a lot less litigious society.

The ones with the knee pads will get more confident with age. Glad to hear they're back.

As a matter of curiosity, what work do you do at the church?

Forgive the slow reply! I sometimes forget what I've answered and what I haven't. I remembered this morning that I hadn't replied to you yet.

That day, I was going to do an hour of prayer. Except, I don't really pray for an hour. I write letters or read, and sometimes pray a *little*. Though, I was so deeply grateful for the experience of meeting up with the skateboarders that I did spend a good few minutes just thinking, "You never fail to surprise me, you never fail to surprise me, you never fail to surprise me." --that was the content of the prayer.

I'm also secretary of the pastoral council, though, which is a good way for a person who's not exactly sure of her status as a believer to contribute in a helpful way (better than something like teaching religious education, which I really couldn't do without being the world's worst hypocrite).

I used to think exactly the same thing, when it came to Xtian ed. It's not all tidy tours of the peeling Noah's ark toy, though.

Have I told you my story about one of the odd times God spoke to me directly, when I was fretting about prayer duties? Bottom line: I think prayer's a mental and spiritual attitude more than a specific thing-to-do, or even a smallish set of things-to-do. And I think God told me more or less that.

I'm not quite sure what that means. I hope it doesn't mean that I've been revolting.

Gosh not at all! I mean, it's great that you had an experience of God speaking to you directly.

Maybe *I* misunderstood something?
