The forest was cut down, and the land was farmed. Then the farmers moved away, and a new woods grew up where the fields had been. And now the old man who wears trousers of pounded bark and a sweater of knitted milkweed keeps chickens in the woods.

There's an old farmhouse nearby, left over from the days when the woods were under cultivation. The people who live there would invite the old man to dinner, but he won't come. So they make soup and set it by the side of the road for him, in a china tureen.

The old man still won't come. He sends a possum posse instead. They pour the soup into tin-can canteens and bring it back to him, and he shares it out, round a fire, there in the woods, late.

That last photo has an almost painting-like quality to it.

Yeah--and yet, it totally *doesn't* catch the way the scene looked IRL. Taking photos at 2 am on a misty night: camera rebels.

At least it rebelled in a good way.

That's true. And you have to let all the participants in the process express their creativity.

It looks like a heart made of smokey light beating between the trees.

I want a possum posse! I do not, however want to wear bark trousers. They sound uncomfortable.

When I saw your pictures on Flickr, I was eagerly awaiting the story that would go with them. :)

It's better than having the chickens end up in the tureen :-)

Love it all, except for the volvo-like car in the 2:nd pic, that one is a tad bit of a buzz killer, but it may be just me and cars...

Yeah, the car was for me, too, but I wanted to have a far-enough zoomed-out photo that you could see that that tureen was just sitting there, right at the edge of the driveway and road, and so the car ended up in the picture too.

The world's more full of weirdness than I can understand... I'm glad you are here to explain these things.

I love the two silver eyes in the last photo, just to the left of the fire.

Oh I didn't even see them! A ghost catamount-of-the-woods must be looking on. Watch out, possums. Watch out, old man.

Odd how the chicken and the tureen are both the same shape from a distance. I wonder if it was chicken soup. (And did the old man count his chickens?)

He knows them all by name and looks, but he's distractible these days. I wonder if he *has* checked.
