Fairy Gold - A Ballad with One Illustration

To give the proper effect, I've put this ballad in an old font, which means I've uploaded it as an image rather than typing it into LJ. Unless you have the eyes of an eagle, to see it properly you will have to click on the image once, twice, three times. Which is as it should be for a ballad with fairies in it.

This took all day... You wouldn't think writing ditties would be so time consuming.
ETA: Okay, I have a tune. Now I just have to practice it like mad. It would be pretty goofy to mess up on my own tune. At least it's all within my range (LOL, which means it has about 5 notes and no more.)I hear...: Fairport Convention: Matty Groves

nice
The poem flows very smoothly. I shall remember the lesson.
Fairies are tricky, but yellow leaves are prettier than gold, in my opinion.

You should upload a recording of you singing it if you have the capability.
The only way I can do that is to sing while I record a little mini-movie with my camera. When I settle on a tune, I might do that. I had a tune (a pretty lame one, but it was All My Own), but then I forgot it. Next tune I come up with, I'll quick record, so I don't forget.

A thrice lovely poem, my dear friend! I love the poem, the images, and the font! Are the leaves in the photo poplar? They look like cottonwoods, from our old home in Tucson, but I'm sure that can't be, not in Massachusetts.
One day, I will be of a mind to write poetry again. When I do, you will be the very first person I share it with. :)
The leaves are bigtooth aspens :-)
I love your haiku, so I'm sure I'd love your poetry.

I see it now; her words are true Nor gold nor apples have I none Why then it's yellow leaves I'll treasure And all Earth's other riches shun.
Prrrr.
♥
I made up a tune for it and then forgot it. (It was a pretty lame tune; I'll make up a better one.)

That was awesome!
Really? Yaaaay!
I wanted to write a really good singable ballad about all these gold coins yellow leaves lying around on the ground.
Seriously, I was picking them up and thinking, I'm rich, I'm so rich. I'm so rich in these leaves!

Have you got a tune in mind?
I've been making simple variations on the sort of minor-key folky tunes I like.
(I don't have a fixed tune in mind yet)
Just now I'm working on one.

That is such fun. I hope that once you've mastered the singing of this, that you'll share the song with us. :-)
P.S. I got my husband to read it, as he's the poet and musician in the family, and he also likes it.

Ah. I should have realized that this is the proper icon for that post. Although the icon from my prior comment is one I think of as Blodeudd (from the Welsh Mabinogion--who was made from flowers).
This way I get to enjoy both icons :-) Thank you!
Oh, I'm glad your husband likes it too. When you say musician, does he play an instrument, sing, or both? What music does he like?
I will try to work up the nerve to share it if I do sing it. The thing is, my singing is really--well, uninformed ... it's awkward to put people in the position of having to comment on something that's very unremarkable at best. But maybe :-)

Karl can sing (he was in a Gilbert and Sullivan show when he was younger, but discovered he didn't like being on stage) and his favorite instrument is the penny whistle, but he also plays guitar and some piano and banjo. Plus, we have several less familiar instruments around the house, such as a psaltry, that we play around with on an irregular basis. I don't think either of us could actually claim to be good with those, but they're still fun.
He likes a lot of different kinds of music, as do I, but Irish music, blues, and rock seem to be his primary favorites. Our Wolgemut CD (German medieval) is really his.
Please don't feel pressured to post anything you don't feel comfortable sharing. I'd love the opportunity to hear your song, but not at the cost of making you uncomfortable.

Such a lovely ballad, and I like the way it's sealed with the leaves at the end ... :)
I'm glad you liked the ballad and the leaves. I think the leaves are so beautiful, but they really are a treasure you can't store... you fill your coffers with these beautiful leaves, then go back to look and the color's faded and they're all curled and dry! Very Japanese....

That was absolutely fantastic! It's a lovely autumn poem, of course, but it gave me the prickles all the way through. Aside from being so lovely in its own right, I can clearly imagine you as the speaker, given the many pictures in your journal over the last few weeks. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful poem with us.
I can't tell you how happy your comment makes me. Your reaction is *exactly* what I hoped for, but a person doesn't dare hope too much. Thank you very, very much.
:D I like it! I'm interested to see what your tune is like. I could transpose it onto manuscript paper for you, if you like. I also thought up how I might interpret it, but these sorts of things are like translations of masterworks: what I may get out of it musically might be completely different from what you had in mind. I hope you don't mind. :)
I think it's fine for a ballad to have more than one tune (lots of them have lots, right?), and anything I come up with is sure to be amateurish, so feel free to go ahead. When I feel confident about my tune (I mean, when I can sing it with something approaching confidence), I'll send you a link or something so you can hear it. If you create a tune, I'd love to hear it too.
(My tune is a riff off one of the traditional tunes for the ballad "Geordie," but it's not exactly the same. I'll send you a midi file of the tune from Georgie that I'm playing off...)
It's **gorgeous**
I love your voice and I **love** your tune.
I'm trying to send you my musical notes (my own little mutterings), but gmail doesn't like the large file, or my internet ISP doesn't, or something, so it's not going through.
But yours was just lovely.
:D Thank ye kindly ma'am.
Gmail sometimes takes a while to download the actual file onto the email for me (took about ten minutes for that file). If you wait a bit, sometimes it goes through. You could also consider putting it on youtube or something, and then linking from there.
oh no, these are horrible notes, not real singing... it'll come through eventually, I hope.
Meanwhile, I'll send you another e-mail with just the text of what I was going to say....
