A photo of duccio's made me think about how the light at certain times of day can affect how time itself seems... and this seemed so appropriate, since light's the vehicle of time and the measure of time, in a sense. There's more to light than meets the eye, but oh, what meets the eye pleases in so many ways.
Light and shadow please, for instance:
.
On another walk, I found this oracular stick. Is there a culture anywhere that reads these signs and tells fortunes? I see here a princess and a dragon, a wise mouse and a coastline. But how this bodes for the future, I can't say.

And then, the ninja girl brought me a peach blossom and a cherry blossom. They are so fragile and beautiful; to be brought these things is a gift indeed. Here they sit like sisters.

I feel...: thoughtful I hear...: Peter, Paul, and Mary: Sinnerman
|
Oh how lovely! I don't think I've ever seen a peach blossom.
I love the idea of an oracular stick. :)
There must be peach trees hiding around near where you live--Ludlow has a peach festival each spring! I like them too :-)
Oh right! Ludlow isn't actually very close to me, but we always do a story on the Peach Festival in the paper. :)
My sense of geography is so bad... I get confused about what's close to what--and then on top of that, I think I was misremembering where you are...
One of the most fun things I did one year was pick peaches at Atkins Farm (the way you'd pick apples, only it was peaches). They don't seem to do it much anymore, though; I think maybe the trees are fragile or the fruit is, or something.
From my one little peach tree, I have enough peaches to make peach ice cream, peach pies, and ... to eat lots of fresh peaches.

Beautiful.
Yes, and begging to be read. If you click through, you can see what I thought looked like what (if you can't guess already).

I looked; I can see your shapes.
I always enjoy your posts so much! Poetry in pictures and words. And the oracular stick is incredibly beautiul.. I'm a sucker for patterns and that one just about gave me the visual equivalent of an orgasm.. Thanks :)
Thank you--Yes, I'm a sucker for patterns too, and there are patterns everywhere.
So glad to share it with you!
I love the stick! I think it's a map, and it changes as you walk.
I've never heard of or seen an oracular stick before. It looks really interesting.
I just made it up--anything can be oracular, in the sense of being used to tell something about the world and the future--like how people used to read entrails, or would see how bones cracked when put in a fire, or how some people still read tea leaves. This stick has had paths carved into it by insects, and it has made such an interesting design, it seems like you'd be able to tell the future from it--or seek the answers to questions. That's what I wonder... is there, or was there ever, some place where people do look at sticks like this to read the future?

I want that stick.
Personally, I see two great beasts eyeing each other across a chasm with a lone mountain between them in the background.
I can see that, too, now that you mention it.
Wow, that is really neat! I love the carvings on the stick. The peach blossom is just lovely, and the light in the first two...
I think the stick is saying that there's adventure ahead.
Glad you liked the photos :-)

I do love your posts and thoughts; they don't have to lead anywhere, they are there and they are so interesting. Love your theory about light and time...that is so intuitively true for me. (Did you see my post about my nails being calendars....a mark on a nail would slowly grow out, and it would let me know how long had elapsed?)
And I like Peter,Paul and Mary...Puff the Magic Dragon....
Lovely pictures, too. You have a very interesting mind.
I didn't see your post about your nails being calendars, but I know what you mean! I've done the same thing, watched a mark travel up my nail. So many ways to notice time passing....
I like your new icon, by the way--what a powerful bird.
Gorgeous photos, and your gnomic words only add to the beauty.
"gnomic" is a great word! Thank you.
My mother has an oracular pig; we should get her to look at the oracular stick :-)
Your posts are always a delight. I love to think of insects boring prophetic inscriptions at which we humans may only guess.

LOL! No, but my father was an elf friend (alvin = aelfwine = elf friend), and kobolds have visited our home.
My mother adores pigs, and was born in the year of the pig; she thought Hen Wen the most charming concept ever.

I love that it was a given to me you knew the Prydain books. I didn't even consider you might not. How cool is that?

Lovely--I love seeing all your exploratory posts. :)
Have you ever seen Chinese oracle bones? The oracular stick reminds me of them a lot.

I have heard of them and how they work, but haven't actually seen them--I should do an image search and have a look. I was kind of thinking of them too, when I saw this stick.
I think the oracular stick could be the beginning of a great story... :) what are you waiting for? And the sister blossoms could fit right in.
I shall have to work it in to one :-)
:-)
I would like to go to the place your icon shows...
I forget where it is. I pulled the image off of Getty, if I remember right. I adore graceful architecture.
Very pretty. Now I want to build a garden on my back porch.
take pictures if you do...

Pics are great and I love the oracular stick....it looks carved! Do insects get up in there, crawl around and leave markings?
Yes, that's it exactly--they nibble trails. I think. Actually, the truth is that i know it's insects, but I don't know exactly how they do it.
the sunny swamp is lovely! i also have a stick like that... this is such a warming and sunny post. thank you :)
You're welcome--enjoy the sun.

oops and the gift of peach and cherry from your daughter is far more precious than the ones send by FTD! lol
Wow, that stick is amazing. Did *nature* make those carvings? I'm in awe. And those blossoms are beautiful. Spring is here!
Nature in the form of little beetles--amazing, huh.
